First Impressions: PolarPro Shortstache Everyday Filter

I recently picked up two of the Shortstache Everyday Filters in 49mm and 72mm for my Zeiss 35mm ZM and Zeiss 50mm ZA lenses. After hearing a lot of hype around these filters, I found both in like-new condition on eBay and wanted to give them a try. With a dual combination of a CPL and Black Mist ¼ filter, they promised an intriguing balance between reducing reflections and adding a soft, cinematic glow.

First Impressions

Designed by PolarPro and Shortstache, the filter’s combination of polarizer and Black Mist diffusion makes it stand out. The CPL function is great for cutting down on reflections and enhancing contrast in scenes with glass or water, while the Black Mist effect introduces a soft halo around light sources and smooths out highlights, creating a subtle, filmic effect. It softens the harsh digital edge, adding a gentle texture and richness that’s especially effective in portraits and landscapes.

The Everyday Experience

The Everyday Filter feels intuitive and efficient, combining two effects in one slim frame that eliminates the need to stack filters, a huge plus for portability. The sturdy yet lightweight design suits on-the-go photography, providing both convenience and creative flexibility. Even for everyday use, I found it effective at enhancing overall color depth and tone while lending a unique, analog feel straight out of the camera.

Why the Filter Shines

The filter’s CPL capabilities are excellent for landscape photographers, helping manage reflections from water, windows, and other glossy surfaces while enhancing colors and details. With the addition of the Black Mist feature, light sources get a gentle, glowing effect, reducing contrast and giving scenes a warm, cinematic look. Together, these qualities make it versatile across various shooting styles, adding atmosphere without compromising sharpness.

Final Thoughts

In just a few test shots, the Shortstache Everyday Filter impressed me with its ability to merge digital clarity with an old-school film feel. It’s a practical option for creators who want to enhance their work in-camera and streamline their setup. This filter adds character and mood to images without heavy post-processing, proving itself a strong choice for filmmakers and photographers alike.
